Adin Helgeson

Adin Helgeson, 93, Bismarck , ND , died Saturday, October 11, 2008, at St. Francis Healthcare Campus-Home, Breckenridge. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 17 th at Wyndmere Lutheran Church , Wyndmere with Rev. Marvin Schoenfish officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to time of service on Friday at the Church. Interment will be held at Elk Creek Cemetery , rural Wyndmere.





Adin Norris Helgeson was born November 29, 1914, to Helmer and Clara (Hauge) Helgeson on his parents homestead, Freeman Township , Richland County , near McLeod , ND . He attended public schools in Freeman Twp and in Wyndmere. He farmed with his parents until joining the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1933. He serviced in the CCC at Itasca Park , MN , Duluth , Bismarck , and in Utah in 1937.





He returned to Wyndmere and married his childhood sweetheart, Doris Anne Mashek at Bethel Lutheran Church , Wahpeton, on September 1, 1937. The couples farmed in West End and Garborg Townships , Richland County , and were members of Gol Aal (Grace) Lutheran Church , rural Wyndmere.





In 1958, Adin moved his family to Fargo , where they were charter members of Hope Lutheran Church ; and to Bismarck in 1962 where he was Director of the North Dakota Department of Weights and Measures until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church , Golden Kiwanis and Sons of Norway, all in Bismarck .





In retirement, Adin enjoyed restoring antique farm tractors and Model A Ford cars. He maintained his farm home in Garborg Township with his wife Doris until her death in 2006, and continued to enjoy spending time there until his death.





Adin is survived by his daughter, Gayle (Arne) Selbyg, Prospect Heights , IL , his son, Gary Helgeson, Bismarck. IN addition to his children and son-in-law, he leaves his grandson, Jon (Amy) Selbyg, Poulsbo , WA and granddaughter, Anne (Joseph) Lindell, St. Louis Park, MN; 2 great-grandsons, Erik and Adin Lindell. He also leaves his home caregiver, Dorothea (Rhone) Ulrich, Bismarck .





Adin was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Willie; his sisters Mildred Mundel, Helen Pokorny and Fern Dasch.





Memorials are preferred to Elk Creek Cemetery Association, Wyndmere , ND 58081 and to the Parish Nurse Fund, Trinity Lutheran Church , Bismarck , ND 58501 .
