Alice Stoltenow, 88, Wahpeton, ND, formerly of Great Bend , ND , died Sunday, June 28, 2009, at St. Francis Healthcare Campus-Home, Breckenridge , MN . Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, July 2 ND at Evergreen United Methodist Church , Wahpeton with Rev. Paul Baker officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service at the Willow Creek Chapel (920 3 rd Ave N), Wahpeton; also, visitation on Thursday one hour prior to time of service at the church. Interment will be held at Fairview Memorial Gardens , Wahpeton.





Alice Joy Stoltenow was born on July 31, 1920 in Wahpeton to Oscar and Dorothy (Dehlendorf) Worner. Alice grew up in Great Bend and lived above the Cash Mercantile Store that her parents owned. She attended school in Great Bend and then graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1938. She graduated from Ellendale State Teachers College at Ellendale , ND where she received her teaching certificate and later taught at LeRoy , MN , Wheaton , MN , Great Bend , ND , and Brandenburg Township .





Alice married Manville Stoltenow on Sept. 24, 1944. They settled on the west edge of Great Bend , ND where they milked cows and farmed. In the summer of 1955, they adopted their daughter Maxine. In 1981, they built a home and moved to Wahpeton. Summers were spent on Blanche Lake and winters were spent traveling south.





Alice was a member of the Evergreen United Methodist Church , the former Great Bend Methodist and E.U.B. Church of Great Bend . She was a Sunday school teacher, played the piano and sang in the church choir, served on various committees, directed the children’s choir in Great Bend for many years, and was involved in a women’s circle at church. She belonged to the Friendly Homemakers Club for over 50 years. Alice loved to sew, garden, spent time at Blanche Lake, play cards, watch the MN Twins, take drives to check the crops, coffee parties with the neighbors, auction sales and spending time with family and friends





She is survived by the love of her life for 64 years, Manville Stoltenow, Breckenridge, MN; her daughter, Maxine (Jeff) Leinen, Great Bend, ND; granddaughter, Kristin (Paul) Texidor, Verona, WI; her grandson, Eric(Chistina) Leinen, Grand Forks, ND; great-granddaughters, Isabella Joy Texidor and Layla Elenor Leinen. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews.





She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 brothers, Oliver and Morris Worner; her sister, Florence Thiele; and her niece, Kathy (Worner) Alden.





Memorials may be made to the Village Family Service, United-Way of Richland-Wilkin, Evergreen United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
