Barbara Hlavaty

Barbara (Bohn) Hlavaty, 64, Menahga, MN, originally Wahpeton, ND, passed away unexpectedly, Friday, November 1, 2013, at Essentia Health, Fargo, ND. The Memorial Service will be November 6, Wednesday, 1 PM at Willow Creek Chapel, (920 3rd Ave. N.) Wahpeton, ND. There will be visitation with the family one hour before the service. Inurnment will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton. Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, have been entrusted with the arrangements.

Barb was born January 20, 1949 at Breckenridge, MN, the daughter of Norman and Vivian (Ehlers) Bohn. She grew up in Wahpeton, was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend, ND, and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton. Barb attended grade school in Wahpeton. During her youth she spent many winter hours skating in Chahinkapa Park; also developing her passion for reading and playing the piano. She graduated from Wahpeton Senior High in 1967, attending NDSCS and graduating from Moorhead State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in English, and a minor in Philosophy. She was united in marriage to Thomas Hlavaty on August 28, 1970 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton. The couple lived in West Fargo, ND, where Barb commuted to Casselton, ND, where she taught English for 32 years. Throughout her teaching career she also taught summer school at Fargo South. The couple retired and moved to Menahga, MN in 2009.

Barb had many interests she was enjoying in retirement; including gardening, knitting, sewing, jigsaw puzzles and crafts. Her family and friends looked forward to receiving her artistic letters; each one being treasured.

Barb is survived by her husband Thomas Hlavaty, Menahga, MN; her son, Nicholas (Antje) Hlavaty, Harborside, Maine; her father, Norman Bohn, Wahpeton; her two sisters: Deborah (David) Shasky, Moorhead, MN; Catherine (David) Eide, Nisswa, MN; three nephews: Matthew (Jennifer) Ketterling, Denver, CO; Andrew (Becca) Harrigan, Ellendale, MN; and Benjamin (Tori) Ketterling, Fargo.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Vivian L. Bohn.
