Daryl E. Thompson, 86, Fairmount, ND, died Sunday, February 10, 2008 at his home surrounded by family and under the care of Riveredge Hospice. The Funeral service will be Wednesday, 11:00 am at United Methodist Church, Fairmount, Fern Bailey officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6 PM to 8 PM with a 7 PM prayer service at Willow Creek Chapel (920 3rd Ave. N.) Wahpeton, and one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. Vertin-Munson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Daryl Edward ?Efficiency? Thompson was born April 18, 1921 to Anna and Charles Thompson in Fairmount, ND. Daryl graduated from Fairmount High School in 1939, then enlisted in the US Army and was stationed in India with the 725th Railway Operating Battalion during World War II. He returned to Fairmount and his job at the Soo Line Railroad. Daryl was a long time member of the Republican Party and was 25th District Chairman of the Republican Party for years. He also served as a Vice Chairman of the Republican Party for the State of North Dakota in the 1960?s.
Daryl was a member of the Methodist Church in Fairmount, the Masonic Lodge #37, the Fern Leaf Chapter #30, the El Zagel Shrine, the Scottish Rite, the Knights Templer, The American Legion and VFW. He loved fishing at Round Lake with his grandkids. He was a photographer extraordinaire.
Daryl married Jane C. (Brown) Schouweiler, the love of his life on June 3, 1962 and shared the love and lives of Jane?s five children as well as all their grandchildren. He firmly believed in family his whole life and made Jane?s family his own.
Daryl is survived by his sister Charlotte Walker (Rochester, MN) five children, Karen (Randall) Hedtke, Barrett, MN; Kay (Roger) Nelson, Fargo, ND; Elizabeth (Thomas) McConn, Plymouth, MN; Roberta (Guy) Whitehead, Wahpeton; and Earl (Debra) Schouweiler, Fairmount, ND; twenty grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild and his niece Marvia Boettcher whom he dearly loved and treated as a daughter.
Daryl was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jane, and his brother Marvin Thompson.
