David was born on March 24, 1945 in St Paul, MN to Carl and Eleanor (Reed) Bechner. He grew up and attended school in St. Paul and graduated from Washington High School in 1963. After high school, he worked at a filling station until he was drafted into the US Army on November 15, 1965. He served his basic training in Fort Carson, CO and trained at Ft.
