Donald W. Ward, 94, Breckenridge , MN , formerly Mooreton , ND , died Thursday, March 18, 2010 at St. Francis Nursing Home, Breckenridge , MN . The Funeral Service will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 22, at the Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton. Visitation will be Sunday, from 3 PM to 5 PM at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery , Wahpeton in the spring.





Donald William Ward was born August 1, 1915 to Elmer D. and Anna C. (DeVries) Ward. He grew up on the family farm and attended schools there. On April 7, 1942 he enlisted in the US Army at Ft. Snelling . He was stationed in the US Army as an Equipment Operator. He was stationed at Newfoundland for one tour. While in the Army, he received a European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon and one Bronze Star and Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He farmed with his brother, Lester, and made his home with them until retirement. Don lived for a time at Mooreton Senior Retirement and he moved to the Leach Home in Wahpeton in 1997. Don entered St. Francis Nursing Home, Breckenridge, on September 9, 2005.





Don was an active member of Mooreton Commercial Club, Wahpeton Eagles and Robert Bergman American Legion Post No. 283, Mooreton, ND. He enjoyed visiting and fishing.





He is survived by his brother Raymond (Pat) Ward, Wahpeton; his three sisters, Marian Ward, Moorhead , MN ; Marlys ( Norman ) Fenske; Karen (Robert) Schmidt, both of Arizona ; several nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Leona Ward, Wahpeton.





He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers: Lester, Ralph, Roy, Warren, Elwood and a sister, Grace Ward.
