Dorval Schmidt

Dorval Schmidt, 89, Breckenridge, MN, formerly of Wahpeton, ND, passed away on Thursday, July 4, 2013 at St. Francis Healthcare Campus, Breckenridge, MN. Funeral services will be on Monday, July 8, at 10:30 AM at Evergreen United Methodist Church, Wahpeton with Pastor Jenny Hallenbeck officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday from 5 PM to 7 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM at Willow Creek Chapel, Wahpeton. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Wahpeton. Arrangements are entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.

Dorval was born in Wahpeton on January 6, 1924 to Walter and Ebba (Olson) Schmidt. He graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1942 and attended NDSCS until entering the Navy Air Force. He served from 1943 until 1946.

Dorval was united in marriage to Phyllis Larson at the Breckenridge United Methodist Church on June 1, 1947 and they recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. Dorval worked for the Auto Parts Co. until 1951 when he was employed by the Postal Service. He retired in 1981 as Postmaster and then he and Phyllis joined the Peace Corp where they served in the Dominican Republic from 1981 to 1983.

Dorval is survived by his wife, Phyllis, Breckenridge, MN; his daughter, Jacque (Dick) Bailley, Denver, CO; his four sons, Greg (Joette), Rapid City, SD, Jeff (Rae), Lewiston, ID, Bob (Terri), Moorhead, MN, Tim (Ann), Wahpeton, ND; his eleven grandchildren; his 13 great-grandchildren; and his two sisters, Leona and Ruth. Dorval was and will always be cherished by his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Earl, Lawrence, and Walter, Jr., and three sisters, Connie, Mary, and Dorothy.
