Eugene Childs

June 24, 1919 — August 13, 2008

Eugene W. Childs 89, of Colfax , ND , died peacefully on August 13, 2008 at Elim Nursing Home in Fargo , ND . The funeral service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, August 16, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church , Colfax , ND , with Rev. Roger Reinhart officiating. Visitation will be Friday, from 5 PM to 8 PM with a 7 PM prayer service at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery , Wahpeton.





Eugene William Childs was born June 24, 1919 in Mortlach , Saskatchewan , Canada , to Clark and Pearl (Boyer) Childs. At 6 weeks of age his family moved back to the Walcott area where they farmed for a living. Eugene was baptized on April 7 th , 1946 as an adult and confirmed November 23 rd , 1958 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Abercrombie , ND . He married Helen Naomi Gunness on April 8 th , 1944 and the couple made their home on the former George Tarr farm and farmed there until 1986. They raised two sons, Larry and Bradley.





Eugene was very active as a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church until 1958 when they transferred to Our Savior’s Lutheran in Colfax. Eugene was on the school board for 9 years and was very active in community events as well. He was also on a bowling team with some of his close friends, and a member of the Fargo Eagles where he and Helen loved to dance. Gene also enjoyed hunting and fishing and the outdoors in general. He loved farming and in later years he took up gardening and enjoyed sharing the produce with friends and neighbors.





He is survived by his wife, Helen, Fargo; two sons, Larry (Linda) Childs, West Fargo, ND; Bradley (Sheila) Childs, Walcott; three grandchildren , Joelle (Kelby) Herman, Wayne, NE; Darci (Todd ) Sauvageau, Forest lake, MN; Kylie (Jamie) Preusse, West Fargo, ND; and three step-grandchildren, Donna (Brian) Hale Antelope, CA; Janet Cullen, Northglenn, Co; Dennis Cullen, Fargo; five great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and many good friends.



He was preceded in death by his parents, Clark and Pearl Childs; his brother and sister-in-law, Veryl and Marie Childs; and his sister and brother-in-law, Florence and Hurthue Tarr.
