Fred Saar

October 5, 1919 — March 26, 2012

Fred Herman Saar was born October 5, 1919 near Leonard ND, the son of Herman and Othelia (Schilke) Saar. He attended school in Leonard and later farmed with his two brothers.

He entered the U.S. Army in 1942, and served in the 507th Parachute Infantry. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Bronze Arrowhead and honorably discharged in September 1945.

He returned to Leonard and married Hermine Hahn on June 25, 1950. They were the proud owners of "Saar's Café". Later he began his long career with the Soo Line Railroad based out of Enderlin ND where he was first a fireman, then a conductor and then a brakeman. In 1985, he retired his 'grip & lantern' and was happy to be at Star Lake near Dent, MN for leisurely summers of fishing, family, and relaxation. In 2005, he entered the Leach Home in Wahpeton and presently resided at St. Francis Home.

Fred was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Enderlin. His talent with the scroll saw created beautiful works that he was proud to share with his children & grandchildren.

Fred is survived by 6 children; 4 daughters and 2 sons: Paulette (Richard) Cronk, Chinook, MT., Sibyl (Paul) Jacklitch, Wahpeton, ND., Marlin (Irma) Saar, Tampa, FL., Brent Saar, Barrow, AK., Trese Saar, Wahpeton, ND., Lori (Mitch) Papke, Bayport, MN., twelve grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; his brother Rienhold (Irene) Saar, Fargo ND., two sisters; Luella Thingstad, Grand forks, ND., and Caroline McLaughlin, Fargo ND.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Othelia Saar; his wife Hermine Saar; four sisters: Amanda Nesemeier, Hattie Luedtke, Lydia Newman, Martha Nesemeier; and one brother, Edward Saar.
