Helen Strege

February 14, 1922 — May 20, 2010

Helen Catherine Strege, 88, of Wahpeton, ND passed away after a brief illness on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at St. Francis Nursing Home in Breckenridge, MN.

Helen was born on February 14, 1922 in Lidgerwood, ND to Edward and Elizabeth (Pavek) Frolek. She attended schools in Lidgerwood, ND and rural Liberty Grove Township.

She married Willard John Strege on November 12, 1946 in Lidgerwood where they lived together on a family farm until moving into Lidgerwood in the late sixties and then Wahpeton in 1970. They had one son, Fred, on August 25, 1952. Helen worked in drug stores in Lidgerwood and Wahpeton and various other businesses before retiring from Hairetage Card and Gifts in 1991. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church and was a past member of the Altar Society.

Helen will be remembered for her love of gardening, pristine lawn maintenance (she was a recipient of Wahpeton’s Yard of the Week), music, dancing, golf, bowling and athletics. She was the co-recipient of the Catbacker of the Year Award in 2009 due to her faithful support of the NDSCS Wildcats basketball team. She also seldom missed a Twins game via TV or radio. Helen was a wonderful grandmother and enjoyed keeping her three granddaughters in line from across the street.

Helen was an excellent cook who enjoyed trying new recipes. She could make a real mean Kolache. Anyone who met her quickly discovered that Helen had a wry and subtle sense of humor. Helen was also one of the few people in this world who could rein in her husband, Willard.

Helen is survived by her son, Fred (Wanda), sister and brother-in-law, Tillie and Henry Novotny, both of whom are 98 and sister-in-law, Edith Strege, who is 92. She is also survived by her granddaughters Sara (Jared) Helgeson of West Fargo, Laura (Ben) Jacobs of Sioux Falls, Angela (Jamie) Coppin of Fargo, and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard, her parents, Edward and Elizabeth Frolek, siblings Clarence (Josepha) Frolek, James Frolek, and Emma (Tony) Heley, and sister-in-laws, Eva Strege and Lolita (Clarence) Pace.
