Vincent Herding

Vincent “Vince” L. Herding, 56, Wahpeton, ND, died Sunday, March 8, 2009, at his home. The Funeral Mass will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, March 13 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Wahpeton with Rev. Dale Lagodinski as celebrant. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. Prayer Vigil followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary, all at St. John’s Catholic Church, Wahpeton. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery , Wahpeton.





Vince was born April 14, 1952, in Breckenridge , MN , the son of Leo and Rosella (Schmit) Herding. He grew up north of Rosholt , SD , with his two younger brothers, spending much of his time working on the family farm. He attended school in Rosholt, where he was involved in 4-H and held offices in all club positions. He graduated from high school in 1970 and enrolled in the diesel mechanics program at NDSSS where he graduated in 1972. His first job as a mechanic took him to Schmidt Implement in Wheaton , MN . Vince was united in marriage to Denise Westphal on June 12, 1976, in Plymouth , MN . The couple made Wahpeton their home where they raised their two daughters. Vince began working for Lillegard Inc. in 1973 and continued to work there through their transition to Titan Machinery.





Vince enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and camping with his family. In recent years he became involving in dirt track racing, both watching and working on his son-in-law's race car. He was always willing to help out anyone, you just had to ask; it didn't matter if you were family, a friend or even a friend of a friend, he was always there.





Vince was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church and was very active in the community. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus, where he served in several offices and was a 4th Degree Knight, he also received honors of “Family of the Year” and “Knight of the Year”. He was a member of the Wahpeton Lions Club and Eagles Club, and was a founding member of the Red River Area Sportsman Club, where he served as club president for 9 years and received both "Sportsman of the Year" and the "Extra Mile Award". He held offices in the different organizations and received various awards in both his work and the community.





Vince is survived by his wife Denise,  two daughters: Rebecca (Rich) Truesdell, and Melissa (Stuart) Schumacher, and grandson Shea Truesdell, all of Wahpeton; his parents, Leo and Rosella Herding, Rosholt, SD; his two brothers, Robert (Susan) Herding, Hankinson, ND; Kenneth Herding, Rosholt, SD; many nieces and nephews; and in-laws and "outlaws".
