James Shorma of Wyndmere, ND died Sunday, January 7, 2018, peacefully at home after lingering illnesses under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley for the past month and a half. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 12, 2018 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Wyndmere from 9:30 am to 10:30 am, followed by the funeral mass at 10:30 am. Burial will be at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Wyndmere. Arrangements are entrusted with Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, ND.
Jim was born the fifth child of Vencel (James) and Bessie Shorma in rural Lidgerwood, ND. He grew up and attended school in Liberty Grove Township and Wyndmere. He was baptized and confirmed in St. John’s Catholic Church, Wyndmere, where he served many years as an altar boy.
The family later moved to Wyndmere to farm. Jim started farming at a very young age and was known to have plowed fields while looking through the steering wheel spokes to see what was ahead. Jim was very generous with helping neighbors, relatives and his brother Joe. One neighbor said he did his own work and then would help others. He was also sought out to cut trees.
Jim’s father died when he was in his early twenties. Jim was able to continue farming with his mother’s help. He crop farmed and had hogs and sheep the first half of his farming career. He farmed without tractors or combine cabs until middle age.
Jim met and married the love of his life Joyce Schuld. Jim and Joyce continued farming for about 20 years; he also helped Joyce with her fall ornamental wholesaling in Fargo, Wahpeton etc. The job was made for him, and he enjoyed talking and joking with produce managers and anyone else he came in contact with. Jim was well liked by many, had a great sense of humor, and loved farming.
Jim is survived by his wife, Joyce; sisters, Marion Hilland and Angeline Anderson; sisters-in-law, Bessie Shorma and Clare (Jerome) Ritter; brother-in-law, David Schuld; nieces, Janice (Tom) Hendricks and Ellen Shorma; nephews, Gary (Amy) Shorma, Dennis (Beth) Shorma, Harvey Shorma and Warren C. (Mary) Anderson; and his nephew and godchild, Peter (Laura) Ritter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Rudy and Joseph Shorma; brothers-in-law, Ray Hilland and Warren H. Anderson; sisters-in-law, Anna Shorma and Dr. Beverly Schuld; nephew, Duane Shorma; and niece, Julene Williams.
Jim will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Wyndmere/Barney Ambulance Rescue Squad or St. John’s Catholic Church, Wyndmere, ND.
