Lois M. Bartels

June 19, 1921 ~ November 4, 2018 (age 97)

Lois M. Bartels, 97 of Wahpeton, ND, passed away on Sunday, November 4, 2018 at CHI St. Francis Health, Breckenridge, MN. The funeral service will be at 2:00 pm on Friday, November 9, with visitation from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home in Wahpeton, with Rev. Larry Schmit officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens in Wahpeton. Arrangements are entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, ND.

Lois Marjorie Bartels, was born June 19, 1921 in Hubbell, MI to Rev. Herbert and Constance (Olsen) Juneau. She grew up in Eau Claire, WI, attending grade school, Jr. High School, Sr. High school and the State Teachers College. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. She taught Elementary grades in Mondovi, Sparta, Beloit and Eau Claire. She also taught Kindergarten Methods at the Teachers College.

On June 16, 1950, she was united in marriage to Rev. Ernest Bartels, at Our Redeemer Church, in Eau Claire.  The ceremony was performed by Rev. H. Juneau, Lois’s father.  Lois and her husband served parishes in Grandin, ND, Foster, Kaukauna and Cleghorn in Wisconsin; and Williston, ND and Wahpeton, ND.  Through the years she served as church organist, choir director, and church secretary.

After the family moved to Williston, ND, she taught adult classes at the college in rosemaling, fiber arts, spinning, weaving, knitting and crocheting. Lois also taught these classes in Tioga, Grenora, Rau, Crosby, Watford City. Moving to Wahpeton, she taught classes through the Adult Education Department at the State College of Science.

Being a musician, she played the piano, organ, and played cello in the Williston Strings, and was one of the founders of the Valley Strings in Wahpeton.

Lois is survived by her son, Robert, Williston, ND and her daughter, Nancy, Wahpeton, ND; grandchildren, William and Alisha Bartels; great-grandchildren, Emily and Tera; her sister-in-law, Lori Juneau, Eau Claire; and three nieces and one nephew.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Ernest Bartels, in 2005; her son, John in 1980; her parents; and two brothers, Roger Juneau and Herbert Juneau, Jr.
