Arnold Heitkamp

Arnold "Arnie" Heitkamp, 87, of rural Barney, ND passed away on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at CHI St. Francis Healthcare, Breckenridge, MN. His funeral mass will be at 10:30 am, with visitation one hour prior, on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Mooreton, ND, with Father Peter Anderl as celebrant. Visitation will also be held at the church on Friday, January 22, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, with a prayer service at 7:00 pm. Burial will be at St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery, Mooreton. Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, ND has been entrusted with arrangements.

Arnold Heitkamp was born on February 5, 1928 to Ben and Lucy (Lingen) Heitkamp at their family farm on Section 9 near Barney. He grew up on the farm and attended rural school. Arnie was united in marriage to Melba Nagel on January 7, 1952 at Mooreton, ND. He served in the US Army and upon returning home, his family moved to their present farm near Barney where they have continued to live and farm. The couple wintered in Mesa, AZ for many years and spent what time they had during the summer on Ottertail Lake.

Arnie was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and served on the church council. He was also a member of the Wyndmere American Legion and Barney VFW. Arnie was active in District 26 Democratic politics and was a North Dakota Delegate to a National Democratic Convention in San Francisco, CA. He enjoyed fishing with his friends, often taking trips to Canada.

Arnie is survived by his wife, Melba, Barney; six children: Jeff (Martha) Heitkamp, Arlington, TX; Paul (Mary Lou) Heitkamp, Wyndmere, ND; Doug (Debby) Heitkamp, Barney; Todd Heitkamp, Barney; Beth (Scott) Madson, Battle Lake, MN; Chris Heitkamp, Goddard, KS; eight grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and six brothers and sisters, Vernon (Arlene) Heitkamp, Wyndmere; Betty Becker, Wyndmere; Ralph (Carol) Heitkamp, Wyndmere; Herbert Heitkamp, Omaha, NE; Eleanor Krueger, Seattle, WA; and Delores (Lonny) English, Omaha.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter, Emily Heitkamp, two brothers, Ray and Dennis, and two sisters Patricia LaCroix and Mary Ellen Salberg.
