Arvid Christenson

October 31, 1926 — August 17, 2016

Arvid Christenson, 89, of Wahpeton, ND passed away on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at Bethany Retirement Living, Fargo, ND. His funeral will be at 1:00 pm on Monday, August 22 at the United Church of Christ, Wahpeton with Pastor Ken Adams officiating. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 pm on Sunday, August 21, 2016 at Willow Creek Chapel, Wahpeton, and also one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at St. John's Cemetery, Lidgerwood, ND. Arrangements are entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.
Arvid was born on October 31, 1926 at Wild Rose, ND to Hjalmer and Helen (Ouren) Christenson. He was baptized in Crosby, ND and later confirmed at Wild Rose Lutheran Church, Dwight, ND. Arvid grew up near Dwight and attended school at Ibsen Township #5.
On July 14, 1949, Arvid married LaVerna Medenwaldt at Hankinson, ND. They lived in Wahpeton until 1952 when they moved to Summit Township in Richland County. In 1957, the couple moved to their farm near Lidgerwood, ND. Arvid farmed until the mid 70's and then drove truck for Arnold Oland for four years. Arvid later worked at Wolfe Ford in Lidgerwood. Arvid and LaVerna returned to rural Wahpeton in 1992 and moved into town in 2002. LaVerna passed away on March 22, 2005 and Arvid continued to live in Wahpeton.
Arvid was a man who was always willing to help anyone out, no matter what was asked of him. He had a passion for music and knew how to play the accordion, keyboard and guitar. He truly enjoyed playing cards with his children and grandchildren, but especially enjoyed whist and uno. He also enjoyed going to the casino. Arvid was an active member in the community and served on several boards including the St. John's Cemetery Board in Lidgerwood, the Richland County Township Zoning Board, the Social Services Board, and the Richland County Historical Museum. Arvid was also a member of the United Church of Christ board and stayed very active in the church. He would always help bake rhubarb, apple and cherry pies for fundraisers every year at the church, and would also participate in the pancake feed.
Arvid is survived by two daughters, Paulette (Vic) Johnson, Dent, MN and Carol Ann (Dave) Stillwell, West Fargo, ND; his grandchildren, Stacy (Steve) Grant, Maple Grove, MN, Lisa Bey (Gene) Carlson, Medicine Hat, Alberta Canada, Lucas Stillwell, Fargo, and Emily Stillwell, West Fargo; his great-grandchildren, Noah and Taylor Grant; and six nephews and two nieces.
He was preceded in death by his wife, LaVerna, his parents, Hjalmer and Helen, and his brother, Sidney Christenson.
