Elizabeth (Betty) Anne Egan, age 84, passed away March 6, 2026, at St. Catherine’s Benedictine Living Center in Wahpeton, N.D. where she had resided since November of the same year. A memorial service will be held in July 2026 in Tyler, North Dakota, with details to be determined later.
Betty was born June 4, 1941, in Breckenridge, MN, the second of five children, to Anne V. and Thomas C. Egan, and grew up on the family farm in the small town of Tyler, ND. In 1959, she graduated from Wahpeton High School as class valedictorian. While in high school, she played French horn in the band. After high school, she attended Marquette University in Milwaukee and earned a degree in history and mathematics in1963.
Betty moved to California in 1964 where she began teaching elementary school and eventually became a school principal in the Los Angeles school district. She went on to earn a master’s degree in 1978 from the California State University at Northridge. Soon after, she started her own business, Egan Education Consultant Services, and authored two textbooks for elementary school teachers, Trees of California and Explorers in California. Later in her career, she taught English as a Second Language for the Spanish-speaking community in Salinas. When she retired from teaching in 2013, she returned to North Dakota to spend time with family.
Betty loved reading literature and volunteered for the Steinbeck Museum in Salinas, CA. She loved learning about local history and visiting associated historic sites as well as the scenic sites of California particularly the Big Sur. She was also a big fan of the Golden State Warriors basketball team.
Betty was much loved by her friends and family and will be remembered for her love of knowledge and wry sense of humor. Betty is survived by her siblings Jeanne Moran, Barbara Rubner and Thomas Egan. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Mary Pat Egan and by her beloved pets Saucy and Brownie.
