Catherine Fogarty

July 3, 1923 — August 22, 2017

Catherine M. (Pearman) Fogarty, 94, Breckenridge, MN, formerly of Lidgerwood, ND was called home on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 surrounded by her loving family at CHI-St. Francis Health, Breckenridge, MN. Funeral Mass will be on Saturday, August 26, at 10:30 AM at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Lidgerwood, ND with Father Philip Chacko officiating. Visitation will be on Friday from 5 PM to 7 PM with a Rosary said at 6:30 PM followed by a prayer vigil at 7 PM at St. Boniface Catholic Church. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the Mass at the church on Saturday. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Lidgerwood, ND. Memorials can be donated to CHI-Health at Home-Hospice. Arrangements are entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, ND.

Catherine, the second of six sisters, was born on July 3, 1923 in Trail City, SD to Frank and Alvina (Gage) Pearman and was a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. Catherine spent her teenage years in Sisseton, SD, and graduated from Sisseton High School. She married Raymond Fogarty on September 28, 1951. Together they had 14 children: Theresa (Gordon) Murray, James, Mary (Vernal) Donnell, Daniel, Michael (Becky), Timothy (Krista), Anne (Adrian) Biewer, Patricia, Michelle, Joan (Jay) Fossum, Jonathan (Paula), Rita Nelson, Carolyn (Dean) Haase, and Alan (Stephanie).

Eventually, the family settled in Lidgerwood, ND. She spent many years working with her husband on the family’s dairy farm and tending a bountiful garden. After raising her children, Catherine, who was proud of being Lakota and spoke out against racism, worked for many years as a night attendant at the Circle of Nations Indian School in Wahpeton, ND. She also enjoyed a rich spiritual life as a member of the St. Boniface parish.

Catherine was a woman before her time who strove always to call things as she saw them, work hard, and to question unkindness and dishonesty. She loved all children, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and provided a warm meal and lullaby to any child in need. Those who knew Catherine will cherish memories of her unfailing charity and generosity, her razor-sharp wit and ready sense of humor, her work ethic, and her talent as a baker. Her legendary pies will live on through her grandchildren, who spent years under Catherine’s expert tutelage.

Catherine’s life is celebrated by her children, 34 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, and her many friends.

She will be greeted in heaven by her parents, her husband, Raymond (November 6, 1993), her children, Daniel (July 1, 1977) and Patricia (November 29, 2006), and her granddaughter, Courtney Haase (September 15, 2005).
