Clifford Bates

Clifford "Sonny" Bates, 75, of Wahpeton, ND passed away on Monday, April 10, 2017 at his residence under the care of CHI Health at Home Hospice. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 14, 2017 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Abercrombie, ND with Rev. Michael Buller officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday, April 13, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place at Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.

Sonny was born on November 1, 1941 to Leo and Sylvia (Canham) Bates in Breckenridge, MN. He grew up in Kent, MN and attended Breckenridge High School. In 1959, Sonny joined the Army where he spent most of his enlistment stationed in Paris, France.

On June 15, 1963, Sonny married Terryl "Terry" Loff. Together, they had three sons, Scott, Monty and Brian. Sonny drove trucks for Silverline Boats, Wil-Rich Manufacturing, and TLP until he retired in 2010.

Sonny is survived by his children, Scott (Charles) and Scott's daughter, Danielle Bates; Monty (Michelle) and their three daughters, Taylor, Alicia, and Chloe; Brian (Kate) and Kate's daughter Ari; and two sisters, Bev and Leeann. He was preceded in death by his wife, Terry; his parents, Leo and Sylvia; and his sister, Vonnie.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to CHI Health at Home Hospice, Breckenridge, MN.
