In Loving Memory of Daniel Edward Bessler

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Daniel Edward Bessler, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Dan, age 74, passed away peacefully at St. Catherine’s Living Center, Wahpeton, ND, surrounded by his family on October 17, 2023.

A memorial service will take place on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at 11:00 am with visitation one hour prior to the service at First Presbyterian Church in Veblen, SD.

Dan was born on July 25, 1949, in Britton, SD, to Keith and Lorretta Bessler of Veblen, SD. He was raised on the farm with brother, Fred, and sister, LaVae. He worked on the farm his entire life, along with having a home in Wahpeton, ND.

Dan married Geraldine Samson in 1970, and together they raised their two sons, Daniel (Mindi) of Fargo, ND, and Kyle (Shasta) of Veblen, SD, in a home in Wahpeton, ND. Dan and Gerry shared a deep and enduring bond for 53 years.

Dan attended high school in Veblen, SD, and excelled in basketball, football and track for the Veblen Cardinals. Dan attended college in Huron, SD, where he earned his BA degree. He worked as a teacher for several years in the Wahpeton School District and later was employed by Red River Valley & Western Railroad in Wahpeton, ND, where he worked for 22 years until his retirement in 2011. Dan’s life was deeply rooted in the land, as he spent the majority of his days working on the family farm in Veblen. He had an unwavering dedication to farming and a strong work ethic in everything he did. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, working on the yard, and cutting trees for an endless supply of firewood. Dan also loved watching Twins baseball and Vikings football, eating chocolate covered peanuts, and the occasional Mello Yello or Mountain Dew.

Dan was a proud grandfather to Maddison Bessler (Portland, OR) and Makenna Bessler (Fargo, ND), whose presence always brought a smile to his face.

Dan was a kind man who found immense joy in the company of his four-legged friends. He had a special place in his heart for Penny, Kona, and Rosie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Keith and Lorretta Bessler, beloved Uncle Kenneth, father-in-law, Herbert Samson, brother-in-law, Jeff Wilkes, several aunts, uncles, cousins, and his faithful dog, Speckles.

Daniel Edward Bessler will be remembered for his bright blue eyes and his unwavering commitment to his family and his work. His legacy lives on through the memories and love he shared with those who had the privilege of knowing him.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Humane Society of Richland/Wilkin Counties (18039 79 1/2 St SE, Wahpeton, ND, 58075), St. Catherine’s Living Center, (1307 7th St. N, Wahpeton, ND, 58075), or CHI Hospice (1110 HWY 75 N.-Suite A, Breckenridge, MN, 56520) in memory of Daniel Edward Bessler.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
