Daryl Johnson, of rural Mooreton, ND, a devoted husband, loving father, and cherished grandfather, passed away on May 2, 2025, in Breckenridge, MN, at the age of 87. Born on August 23, 1937, in Breckenridge, Minnesota, to Darwin and Roma (McLeod). Daryl's journey through life was characterized by his deep commitment to family, a passion for farming, and an unwavering devotion to his community.
From an early age, Daryl demonstrated a strong work ethic, which he learned while farming alongside his father. In December 1960, he began a lifelong career in agriculture that would span decades. He graduated from Antelope High School in 1955. Later he was drafted into the Army and proudly served his country in California, Missouri, and Germany, receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1962. Upon returning home, he embraced the responsibilities of the family farm, where he ultimately took the reins following the passing of his father in July 1970. On October 3, 1964, Daryl was united in marriage to Kathleen (Kathy) Leinen, embarking on a beautiful partnership that flourished through the years. Together, they welcomed three beloved children into the world: Brett, Cindy, and Ryan, who were all raised on the family farm outside of Mooreton. Daryl and Kathy shared a passion for creating lasting memories which included spending summertime at the lake, winter vacations, camping, and enjoying the beauty of the country together.
As a farmer, Daryl was not only dedicated to the land but also to his community. He took immense pride in his accomplishments, particularly being recognized as a "corn champion" in North Dakota for four consecutive years. During his farming career, he contributed to the community by serving on numerous boards, including the Mooreton Elevator Board, Galchutt Oil, Antelope Township, Antelope Methodist Church, and the North Dakota Corn Board. His leadership and commitment profoundly impacted on the lives of those around him.
Daryl's interests extended beyond agriculture, he had a zest for life that was evident in his many hobbies. He relished in attending sporting events of his children and then his grandchildren. He greatly enjoyed hunting, fishing, softball, bowling, and card nights with the “boys”. He excelled in shooting trap, where he won numerous awards and trophies.
He loved his family deeply, and his legacy lives on through his wife Kathy, and their three children: Brett (Michelle) Johnson, Cindy (Brian) Becker, and Ryan (Missy) Johnson. Daryl was a doting grandfather to nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Alissa (Blake), Alec, Lauren, Ryanna, M’Kenna, Parker, Keira, Emerson, Bridger, Ella, Emery, and Beck, nurturing them with affection and warmth.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Darwin and Roma Johnson, and his sister Karen (Ronald) Spelhaug.
A Memorial Service will be held in his honor at 11 AM, Wednesday May 7, 2025, at Evergreen Methodist Church, Wahpeton. Visitation will begin at 9:30 AM, up until the time of the service. Pastor Kori Lehrkamp will officiate.
The memory of Daryl Johnson will forever remain in the hearts of those fortunate enough to know him, enriched by the love of family and friends, and a legacy of hard work, community service, and boundless joy.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Antelope Cemetery or Hospice of the Red River Valley.
