David Heitkamp, 63, of Cedar Rapids, IA, formerly of Mooreton, ND passed away on Monday, July 3, 2017 at Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, IA due to complications of Parkinson’s disease.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am, on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Mooreton, ND with Rev. Peter Anderl as Celebrant. Burial will be at St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 pm on Friday, July 7, 2017 with a 7 pm prayer service at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, ND, and one hour prior to the service on Saturday in Mooreton.
David Heitkamp, son of Sylvester and Martha (Zalewski) Heitkamp was born on September 8, 1953 in Breckenridge, MN. He attended school at Mooreton Elementary, Wahpeton High School, NDSSS, and NDSU. He completed his education at the University of Iowa with a Masters in Engineering. David has been employed at FMC Link-Belt, Cedar Rapids, IA, P&H Crane, Cedar Rapids, IA, Koehring Crane, Milwaukee, WI, and Rockwell Collins, Cedar Rapids, IA until the present time.
David enjoyed his many years working on the family farm along with hunting, target shooting, and driving his red Mustang. He also earned a black belt in Karate. He enjoyed hearing what his nieces and nephews were doing in their lives. He will forever be known for his love of reading which resulted in his own personal library.
David was “friend” to many, some of which are Tony Nordick, John Walkup, Kevin Kutzer, Steve and Angie Sawyers, George/Deanna Hanson, David Hanson, Gary Duggleby, Jill Butler, Mark and Judy Osborn, Irv Girtz, Jan Aasgaard, Jim Kleeman, Rod Osterhlt, and Frank Kintzle.
David is survived by his siblings: Brian (Brenda) Heitkamp, Bismarck, ND, Joyce Haugen, Wahpeton, ND, and Dean Heitkamp, Marion, IA; nieces and nephews: Kyle (Lindsay Guzzo) Heitkamp, Edmonds, WA, Megan (Steve Szczodroski) Heitkamp, Coon Rapids, MN, Alan Haugen, Cookeville, TN, and Kelly Heitkamp, Bismarck, ND; and his great-niece and great-nephew, Juniper and Hartley Szczodroski.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester and Martha Heitkamp, grandparents, John and Angeline Zalewski, and John and Angela Heitkamp.
