David Rasmussen

April 11, 1960 — August 21, 2015

David Joel Rasmussen, 55, died on August 21, 2015, in Breckenridge, MN, under Hospice care.
David was born on April 11, 1960, in Crookston, MN, to Lowell and Marian Rasmussen. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith at Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile, MN. Dave attended Fertile-Beltrami school, graduating in 1978. He attended Concordia College in Moorhead, earning a Bachelor's degree in instrumental music education. David's 33 year teaching career took him to Rolfe, IA, Coon Rapids, IA, Beach, ND, and 17 years in Wahpeton, ND.
David grew up in a musical household and developed a lifelong passion for music and musicianship. He was accomplished on several instruments and played in a variety of bands and orchestras in school, college, and club settings. He was an excellent trumpet and bass player.
Other interests throughout his life were golf, bicycling, and collecting vinyl record albums. David had a reputation for walking nearly everywhere year-round. He approached his hobbies as he did his teaching and his life: with enthusiasm, intensity, and discipline. David was true to himself and set a high standard, but was also known for his warm, dry humor and caring. He leaves a legacy of teaching the craft and joy of music to many.
David is survived by his father, Lowell, Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home, Erskine, MN; two brothers: Paul (Sandy), Moorhead, MN; Dean (Sandy), Fertile, MN; niece Beth (Erik) Fladhammer; nephew Joey (Leslie) Rasmussen; several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
David was preceded in death by his mother, Marian (2009), and grandparents.
The Wahpeton Public Schools will be hosting a service to celebrate the life of David Rasmussen on Friday, September 11 at Willow Creek Chapel in Wahpeton, ND from 5pm to 6pm. There will be opportunities to share memories about David. A private family burial ceremony will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Breckenridge, MN at a later date.
Memorials in honor of David can be sent to Wahpeton Public Schools to be used in the music department.
