Debra Joy Tobias

Debra “Deb” Joy Tobias passed away on July 29, 2026, in her home in Wahpeton, ND. A memorial service will be held at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 11 AM, with visitation one hour before.

Deb was born on May 30, 1952, in Breckenridge, MN, to Joyce and Earl Tobias. She was raised in Wahpeton, North Dakota, and graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1970. Deb attended North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, ND, and earned an Associate's Degree in Accounting in 1972. 

Deb worked various jobs before landing at Wahpeton Glass and Paint, where she worked for many years before opening her own business, Tobias Paint, Glass, and Decorating, in 1990. Deb took great joy in helping people create beautiful spaces, inside and out. Her knowledge of the paint business was remarkable, and every customer was treated like a friend. In her younger years, Deb was an active member of the Women’s Softball Association, enjoyed playing and coaching, and was especially known for hitting home runs. Deb served on the Wahpeton Park Board for many years and enjoyed being of service to the Wahpeton community. Over the years, she also volunteered her time with the Special Olympics and Relay for Life. One of Deb’s favorite places to spend time was at the lake. While Deb always had a “project” on her mind, spending time with friends and family by the water was always something she looked forward to.

Deb leaves a legacy of friendship, kindness, and generosity. She freely gave of her time and resources to help anyone in need, and those lucky enough to call Deb “friend” could recognize her laugh from across a crowded room and would look forward to a hug upon parting.

Deb is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Randy and Nanci Tobias; her nieces, Stacey Tobias (Jacob Ell) and Courtney Tobias (Dom Izzo); the great-niece and great-nephew she adored, Brynley Ell and Jackson Izzo; her dog, Kody; many extended family; and everyone who called her friend.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Joyce Tobias.
