Diana M Speidel

May 10, 1946 — April 8, 2024

Diana Speidel, age 77, was born on May 10, 1946, in Breckenridge, Minnesota, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on April 8, 2024. She was the beloved daughter of Miron (Jack) Schlener and Ordell Deloris Hackey. Diana’s life was filled with love, laughter, and countless cherished memories.

Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at 11:00 AM with visitation one hour prior, at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home in Wahpeton, ND. Pastor Richard Kramer will officiate the service. Arrangements have been entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home.

After graduating from Wahpeton Senior High in 1964, Diana embarked on a journey that would touch the lives of many. She married her high school sweetheart, Larry Speidel, on November 6th, 1965. Together, they shared a bond that transcended time and distance.

Larry’s deployment to Vietnam led Diana back to her roots in Wahpeton, where she made a lasting impact on her community. Diana managed the Valley Motel for several years, ensuring that travelers felt at home during their stay. Her warm smile and genuine care made her a favorite among guests.

  1. Diana worked at Sweetheart Bakery for a few years and always brought treats home for her kids.  Diana’s passion for education led her to become a dedicated teacher’s aide at Zimmerman Elementary. She nurtured young minds, fostering curiosity and kindness. Later, as a receptionist at the Wahpeton Clinic (which eventually became Essentia Clinic), Diana greeted patients with compassion and ensured their needs were met.

Beyond her professional life, Diana reveled in her hobbies. She stitched cozy pajamas for her beloved grandkids, piecing together love and warmth. Puzzles challenged her mind, embroidery threads wove stories, and card games brought laughter. Bowling nights with friends were a highlight, and she cheered loudly from the sidelines as her grandkids played sports.  She also enjoyed baking better than sports cake, special K bars, and yum yum brownies.

Diana was head of the Wahpeton 100-year Centennial and brought “Willy the Bobcat to her home for a day or so”.  She was instrumental in the Wahpeton Hockey Association and getting the arena in town.

Diana is survived by her devoted husband, Larry, in Wahpeton, North Dakota. Her legacy lives on through her children:
        •       Trever Speidel and his dear friend Lisa Kelsey in Gilbert, Arizona
        •       Teresa Lingen and her husband Donnie in Wahpeton, North Dakota
        •       Todd Speidel and his wife Karen in Selby, South Dakota
Her sisters, Lori Meyer and her husband Merlin in Wahpeton, and Mina Hanson and her husband Ron in Moorhead, Minnesota, share in the memories of their beloved sister.
Diana’s heart overflowed with love for her grandchildren:
        •       Michael, McKenzie, and Halle Speidel, children of Trever
        •       Brock and Amber Lingen, children of Teresa and Donnie
        •       Alexandra, daughter of Todd and Karen
Numerous nieces and nephews also carry forward her spirit.
Diana Speidel’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with threads of love, resilience, and joy. She touched many hearts, inspired minds, and left an indelible mark on all who knew her. May her memory be a beacon of light for generations to come.

Proceeded in death by her parents Miron and Deloris Schlener, her brother Brian Schlener, and her grandparents.
