Donald R. Ewald

September 16, 1934 — July 7, 2024

Don Ewald, 89, passed away peacefully at St. Catherine’s Benedict Home in Wahpeton, ND on Sunday, July 7, 2024, after a long battle with kidney disease. His funeral service will be at Peace Lutheran Church in Barney, ND at 11 AM on Monday, July 15, 2024, with visitation starting at 10 AM. Pastor Brock Schmeling will officiate.  The burial will be in the church cemetery.

Don was born to Harry and Olga (Score) Ewald in Wahpeton, ND on September 16, 1934, with his twin sister, Donna. They grew up on their parent’s farm north of Barney and shared many happy days together attending elementary school in Garborg Township.  He graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1952 and gradually took over the operation of the family farm. His brother, Robert, joined him in 1956 and their nephew, Dan Dahlgren, followed in the 1980’s, becoming like a son to his uncles.

Don spent his winters in Brownsville, TX, where he loved being outdoors and golfing with friends. He was especially proud of his Hesston belt buckle collection and could often be found searching markets for his missing ones!

Don met his wife, Helen Schneider, in Palm Resaca Park in Brownsville and they married in 2001. After marriage, the couple moved into their home in Wahpeton and continued to winter in Brownsville. Helen passed away in 2021.

Don is survived by his twin sister, Donna Dahlgren of Breckenridge, MN; niece, Debra (Bruce) Nordick of Bemidji, MN; nephews, Dan (Brenda) Dahlgren, Walcott, ND and Dave (Melissa) Dahlgren, West Fargo, ND; and his stepchildren, Yvonne Anderson, Bernie Schneider, and Jerry Schneider, all of Odessa, Saskatchewan, Canada. He is also survived by 6 grand-nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Schneider Ewald; his parents; brother, Robert; sister, Beverly Witt; and brothers-in-law, James Witt and Eddie Dahlgren.
