Douglas Wayne Herrick was born on December 24, 1951, to Wayne and I ola (Brosowske) Herrick in Breckenridge, MN. He grew up in Abercrombie, ND where he worked on the family farm and graduated from Richland High School in 1969. After graduation, Doug enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he was stationed in Minot, ND, Texas, and Okinawa, Japan, and became very involved playing softball. After he was discharged from the service, he returned home and was married to Lucy Tschakert on April 29, 1978, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Kent, MN. The couple moved to Wahpeton where they raised their three children, Wayne, Joe, and Mike. Doug enjoyed his many years spent working for Chahinkapa Zoo as a zookeeper until he was no longer able to work.
Doug enjoyed hunting ducks, deer, and pheasants, but his passion was sports. He always attended his children’s activities and made sure they had everything they needed to succeed, and even coached many of their teams. He was an avid follower of the Wahpeton Huskies, Richland Colts, and Breckenridge Cowboys athletics. The sport that Doug enjoyed the most, however, was always softball. He and his teams played in several national tournaments over the years, and he was eventually inducted into the North Dakota Softball Hall of Fame.
Doug is survived by his children, Wayne (Amy) Herrick, Joe (Laura) Herrick, and Mike (Kelsey) Herrick; his grandchildren, Brody, Brooklyn, Elizabeth, Halle, and Hannah Herrick; his sisters, Paula Aigner and Janelle (Neal) Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Herrick; and his parents, Wayne and I ola Herrick.
