Douglas Mahler

February 3, 1946 — August 17, 2016

Doug Mahler, 70, Fairmount, ND, passed away on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 in his home under the care of his family and CHI Health at Home- Hospice. Funeral services will be on Tuesday, August 23, at 2:00 PM at First English Lutheran Church, Fairmount, ND with Rev. Anthony Ahrendt officiating. Visitation will be on Monday from 5 PM to 7 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM at Willow Creek Chapel, Wahpeton, ND. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Interment will be at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Tyler, ND. Arrangements are entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, ND.

Doug was born on February 3, 1946 in Breckenridge, MN to William and Elnora (Gast) Mahler. He attended DeVillo Township School until the seventh grade when transferred to Fairmount School and graduated in 1965. He then attended NDSCS and received his Associate Degree in Liberal Arts and then began farming with his father.

Doug was united in marriage to Carmen Costain at the United Methodist Church in Milnor, ND in 1972. They lived and worked on the family farm and raised their two sons Eric and Justin. He retired from farming in 2015 due to a decline in his health.

Doug enjoyed spending time with his family, his two grandsons, and his friends. He enjoyed watching NDSU Bison Football, traveling, hunting, fishing, and visiting with his friends. He was president of the North Dakota Farmer's Union Local, director of the Fairmount Fire Department, treasurer for DeVillo Township, Financial Secretary for First English Lutheran Church, and treasurer for the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery of Tyler.

Doug is survived by his wife, Carmen, his two sons, Eric (Autumn), Fulshear, TX, Justin, Fargo, ND; his two grandsons, Colton and Levi Mahler, Fulshear, TX; his brother, Curtis (Vi) Mahler, Milnor, ND; his sister, Kathleen (Cliff) Hamlow, Lake Oswego, OR; and many nieces, nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Lavonne Kysilka, his brother, Maynard, and his nephew, Steve Kysilka.
