Edna Onchuck

Edna Mae Onchuck, 83, Wahpeton, ND passed away on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at CHI St. Francis Health, Breckenridge, MN. The Funeral Mass will be on Monday, May 22, at 11:00 AM at St. John's Catholic Church, Wahpeton, ND with Rev. Dale Lagodinski officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday, from 5 PM to 7 PM with a prayer vigil at 7 PM at the Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Wahpeton. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Carmelite Monastery, Wahpeton. Arrangements are entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, ND.

Edna was born on January 9, 1934 in Fargo, ND to John and Minnie (Semple) Lechleiter. During her early school years, the family moved to Wahpeton, ND and shortly thereafter they moved to a farm south of Breckenridge, MN. Edna attended school in Doran, MN and then she attended St. Mary's Catholic School through the eighth grade and graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1951. She was then a court recorder for the Wilkin County Court.

Edna was united in marriage to Gerald Onchuck on June 19, 1952 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Breckenridge, MN. The couple made their home on a farm west of Wahpeton. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and canning. Edna was the Matriarch of her family; she did everything along with her children, from fieldwork, to working with livestock, to doing the accounting for the farm and feed business. Living right across the river, Gerald and Edna and their family attended Mass at the Carmelite Monastery, which still holds a special place in all their hearts for many reasons.

After Gerald's death, Edna started working at Dakota Magic Casino in 1997 and loved her position as a Customer Service Manager until her retirement in September, 2015 at the age of 81. Following her retirement, she continued to enjoy her spontaneous road trips with her friends and family. Throughout her entire life she enjoyed the companionship of her pets.

Edna is survived by her eleven children, Gregg Onchuck, Wahpeton, ND, Pamela (John) Hoff, Flasher, ND, Roxanne (Robert) Johnson, Pinckney, MI, Vicki Bellin, Wahpeton, ND, Dean (Anita) Onchuck, Mooreton, ND, Gary (Monica) Onchuck, Wahpeton, ND, Jeff (Sheryl Tisdel) Onchuck, Lidgerwood, ND, Sherry (Randy) Wieser, Hankinson, ND, Peggy (Tom) Materi, Breckenridge, MN, Sandra (Ryan Sorenson) Onchuck, Crystal, MN, Stacey (Jon) Whitcomb, Otsego, MN; her 30 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Minnie Lechleiter, her husband, Gerald Onchuck, her grandson, Lance Onchuck, her son-in-law, Dennis Bellin, her sisters, Mildred McCombs, Gladys Pazdernik, and her brothers, John Lechleiter and Donald Lechleiter.
