Ethel Smith

Ethel Smith, 78, Wahpeton, ND passed away on Thursday, December 29, 2016 at CHI-St. Francis Healthcare, Breckenridge, MN. Funeral service will be on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at 10:30 AM at United Church of Christ, Wahpeton, ND with Rev. Ken Adams officiating. Visitation will be on Monday from 5 PM to 7 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Interment will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton. Arrangements are entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, ND.

Ethel was born at home in Foxhome, MN, August 21, 1938, to Andrew and Evelyn (Green) Andel. She was baptized in 1943; her sponsors were Gilbert and Bernice Andel. Ethel started school in Foxhome and moved to Breckenridge in the late 40's. She perfected her love of cooking and baking while working at Uncle Jim's Hamburger Inn, Cal's Diner, Kelly's Steakhouse, and Clem's Café.

Ethel married Marlyn Smith August 20, 1959, in Webster, SD. They lived on the same farm as Marlyn's parents Ferd and Taletta Smith. She stayed busy raising two sons and helping on the farm. She was known and respected by the local elevators. Ethel's hobbies were gardening, canning, crocheting, and scrapbooking.

Ethel is survived by her husband of 57 years, Marlyn, her two sons, Duane (Jean) Smith, Wahpeton, ND, and Russ (Rachelle) Smith, Bemidji, MN; two grandchildren, Tyler and Clay (JaKayla); three great-grandchildren, Alec, Brenner and Flynn; sisters, Leona Peterson, Redmond, WA, Shirley Romfo, Souris, ND, Blanche (Carroll) Olsen, Moorhead, MN, and Judy (Mike) Pratt, Bloomington, MN; brother-in-law LeRoy Larson, Grand Rapids, MI.

Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; Andrew and Evelyn Andel, sisters; Dorothy, Ruth (Chester) Polda, Esther Larson; and brothers-in-law; Phil Peterson, and Roger Romfo.
