Ethel Spelhaug

Ethel Keciah (Olerud) Spelhaug, 97, Wahpeton, formerly of Wyndmere, ND, passed away on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at CHI St. Francis Home in Breckenridge, MN surrounded by her family. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 pm, followed by her funeral service at 2:00 pm on Monday, January 25, 2016 at Wyndmere Lutheran Church, Wyndmere, ND. Burial will follow at Viking Lutheran Cemetery near Walcott, ND. Arrangements have been entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, ND.
Ethel was born on November 13, 1918 to Christian and Caroline (Egge) Olerud. Ethel attended Lakeside and Pleasant Consolidated Schools in rural Kindred, ND. She spent most of her childhood years helping care for her siblings.
Ethel married Manfred Spelhaug on September 26, 1942. To this union, one child was born, Ronald. They made their living farming southwest of Wyndmere when they were newlyweds. In 1946, they purchased a farm in Garborg Township where they resided until 1976 when they moved into Wyndmere. Manfred passed away in January of 1985. Ethel remained in Wyndmere until 2010 and then resided at the Leach Home in Wahpeton.
Ethel's family was her life. She was always interested in what her son, granddaughters, and great-grandchildren were doing. She enjoyed caring for her flowers, keeping her car clean, ironing, and playing bingo. She also had a love for animals, especially her grand dogs, Molly and Magnum.
Ethel is survived by her son, Ronald, Wyndmere; granddaughters, Kimberly (Kelly) Hagel, Argusville, ND and Kami (Charles) Strege, Wyndmere; three great-grandchildren, Cody, Megan, and Parker Strege, all of Wyndmere; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Manfred; parents, Christian and Caroline; five brothers: Chester, Archie, Gayler, Carl, and Edwin; three sisters: Hazel, Lorraine, and Leona; and her daughter-in-law, Karen Spelhaug.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff at Sanford, St. Francis Nursing Home, The Leach Home and Dr. Mayo for their continued care during Ethel's stay.
