Gerald D. Davis, 95, of Wahpeton, North Dakota, passed away Monday, March 30, 2026, at St. Catherine South in Fargo, ND, surrounded by the love of his family. Gerald was born at home during a snowstorm on March 17, 1931, in Barney Township, to Embert and Agnes (Hafner) Davis. He attended the Barney school district and graduated from Wyndmere High School in 1949.
On January 3, 1952, he married Bernice Heitkamp at St. Anthony’s Church in Mooreton, ND. They spent 74 years together and raised 8 children. In 1974 the family moved to Henning, MN. In 1975 they returned to Wahpeton, ND and became members of St. John’s Catholic Church and have resided there ever since.
Gerald was a man who built a legacy not in just what he did but in who he was as a father, grandpa, papa, and a friend to so many. As a grandpa and papa, he cherished every moment he had with us kids. He always had words of wisdom and stories from a lifetime of experiences. His laughter and sense of humor will stay with us forever. We learned the importance of family and how to always be there for each other. The memories we made with him and the love he gave us shaped who we are today and will live on for generations as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren carry forward the love and impact he had on our lives.
Gerald was drafted into the United States Marine Corps in January 1952. He served in Barstow, California as head cook until his honorable discharge in 1954. He was an active member of the Mooreton Robert Bergman American Legion Post 283 for 71 years. Gerald will be remembered for starting Little League baseball in Mooreton which grew into American Legion teams.
Gerald began his 40‑year career with the United States Postal Service in 1955 after being appointed Postmaster of Mooreton, ND. He became a rural mail carrier in 1963, always checking on the older residents and leaving gum for kids in the mailboxes. He was named Outstanding Carrier by the North Dakota Rural Letter Carriers Association in 1994. Gerald retired on August 31, 1995.
Gerald was also known for his exceptional carpentry skills. He generously helped countless family members and friends with building projects. His greatest joy was the lake home he built on Blanche Lake in 1980, which he and Bernice lovingly share with everyone they considered “family”. His craftsmanship lives on through the wooden horses, benches, and mailboxes he created for his family.
Gerald is survived by his beloved wife, Bernice, of Wahpeton; his children: Gerald L. Davis, Timothy (Kathy) Davis, John (Kathy) Davis, Rebecca (John) Luckmann, Ronald (Sheila) Davis, Angela (Tom) Meyer, Karen (Jesse Fabre) Mickish, and Edmund Davis; many grandchildren and great‑grandchildren; his brother, Embert (Donna) Davis, and brothers-in-laws Allen Goerger and Charlie Lenz.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter‑in‑law, Mary F. Davis; his grandchildren, Rory L. Davis and Jake E. Davis; great-grandson, Noah Buzzard; and siblings, Lavern “Buzz” Davis, Donovan Davis, James Davis, Beatrice Foertsch, Corrine Gira, Doris Reimann, Patricia Goerger, and Mary Lenz.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thank you to Maple View Memory Care and St. Catherine South for the care Gerald ‘Ole GD’ received.
