Gladys was born on May 13, 1924 in rural Wyndmere, ND to Henry and Chisteen (Kjos) Friskop. She grew up in the Wyndmere area and graduated from Wyndmere High School. She then went on to Valley City State University and received her teacher's certificate. After her graduation she started teaching country school in Antelope Township for one year and Mooreton Township for one year.
While teaching, she met Lester Deike and they were united in marriage on May 4, 1946 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Wahpeton, ND. The couple lived in Great Bend for six years while Lester farmed with his father and brother. In the fall of 1952, the couple moved to a farmstead near the Deike home farm and built their own home where they lived for the next fifty years. Eventually, they moved into Wahpeton and after Lester passed away, Gladys became a resident of Twin Town Villa in Breckenridge, MN.
Gladys was a very proud Norwegian woman who was independent, strong, and nurturing all at the same time. She personified the "farm wife" and took care of everyone else's needs first. She was a quilter, sewed clothes, and had a vegetable garden from which she canned her crop. She loved to get together with her friends to play cards, especially Rook and Whist. She also liked to get together with the Friendly Homemakers Club.
Gladys is survived by her daughters, Renae (Dennis) Parvey, Minnewauken, ND, Mary (Don) McCloskey, Wahpeton, ND; her grandchildren, Tricia Kummer, Ames, IA and her children, Hannah, Abigail, and Madeline; Chad (Hilary) Deike, Ames, IA and their children, Kwin and Chase; and Matthew Parvey, Valley City, ND; her step-grandchildren, Timothy (Kami) McCloskey, Greg McCloskey, Kris (Myron) Pietrusziwski, Randy (Diana) McCloskey, Shannon McCloskey; her sisters-in-law, Dorothy Friskop, Breckenridge, MN, LaMae Friskop, Fargo, ND; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Chisteen Friskop, her husband, Lester Deike, August 10, 2008, her son, Larry Deike, April 29, 2001, her step-grandchild, Kevin McCloskey, her five brothers, and one sister.
