Herbert John Youngquist, 97, lifelong resident of Wahpeton, ND, died on Friday, April 25, 2025, at Benedictine St. Catherine's. The memorial service will be held at a later date.
Herbert John Youngquist was born March 16, 1928, to Herbert C. and Ann E. (Lehman) Youngquist in Breckenridge, MN. He grew up in Wahpeton, attending St. John’s Catholic School and graduating from Wahpeton High School in 1945. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in April 1946 with the 568th Air Engineering Squadron, 358th Air Service Group overseas at Clark Air Force Base, Republic of the Philippines. He received his honorable discharge on September 17, 1947. Returning to Wahpeton, he attended North Dakota State College of Science. On June 11, 1951, he married the love of his life, Rosemarie Salness, Fergus Falls, at St. John’s Church in Wahpeton. Herb was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Soil Conservation Service, where he continued working until his retirement on March 18, 1983. He continued to reside in Wahpeton after retirement, where he enjoyed being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, along with fishing, gardening, reading, and all NDSU sports. In 2021, Rose and Herb moved from their family home to Benedictine St. Catherine’s. Herb cherished his time with the staff of St. Catherine’s.
He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, Hafner-Miller-Ross American Legion Post in Wahpeton, and a proud charter member of the Wahpeton Buffalo Club.
He is survived by a son, David (Gloria), San Benito, Texas; two daughters, Nancy Diederich, Wahpeton, and Connie Vagts, Wahpeton; five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rose Youngquist, his parents, brother, Garfield Youngquist, sister, Margaret Hammer, and son-in-law, Dan Diederich.
