Iola Herrick, 88, Wahpeton, ND, formerly of Abercrombie, ND, passed away on Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at St. Catherine's Living Center, Wahpeton. The funeral service will be on Tuesday, February 23, at 2:00 PM at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Abercrombie, with Rev. Michael Buller officiating. Interment will be at Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Abercrombie. Arrangements are entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, ND.

Iola was born on February 2, 1928 in Wahpeton, ND to Rueben and Mable (Peterson) Brosowske. She grew up on a farm southwest of Colfax, ND in Nansen Township where she also attended country school. In 1944, she was a nanny in Abercrombie until moving to Wahpeton and working at NDSSS.

Iola was united in marriage to Paul Ihland on March 30, 1947 at Peace Lutheran Church, Barney, ND. They made their home on the Ihland family farm. On January 19, 1948 Paul was killed in a tragic farm accident and Iola and their young daughter, Paula went to live with her parents on their farm near Colfax, ND. On December 12, 1949, Iola married Wayne Herrick at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead, MN and they lived for 64 years on the farm north of Abercrombie. In 1965, Iola started her employment with Red River Telephone in Abercrombie as an Administrative Clerk. She worked for them for 25 years and retired in 1990. Wayne passed away on September 2, 2012 and Iola then moved to Sienna Court in Wahpeton and later moved to the Leach Home.

Iola was an active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Abercrombie Senior Citizens, and Valley Homemakers. Iola was a woman who enjoyed a challenge in everything from finding a one penny error in a checkbook to the hard crossword puzzles and brain teasers. She enjoyed sewing and being an interactive mother with her children, which followed along to her grandchildren. Iola lived by the motto, "Never give up. Never give in. Stick to your job and you will always win."

Iola is survived by her children, Paula (Paul) Ihland-Aigner, Wolverton, MN, Doug Herrick, Kent, MN, Janelle (Neal) Johnson, Wahpeton, ND; her eight grandchildren, Beth Swenson, Dan Aigner, Ross Aigner, Wayne Herrick, Joe Herrick, Mike Herrick, Chad Johnson, and Lora Edwards; her fifteen great grandchildren; her brothers, Arlin (LaVonne) Brosowske, Fergus Falls, MN, Dennis (Delina) Brosowske, Tigard, OR; and her sister, Renee Baer, Aurora, OR.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rueben and Mable Brosowske, her first husband, Paul Ihland, her second husband, Wayne Herrick, her daughter-in-law, Lucy Herrick, and her brother-in-law, James Baer.
