Irene Hruza, 88, of Wahpeton, ND passed away on February 3, 2017 at St. Catherine's Living Center, Wahpeton. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, with a wake at 7:00 pm on Friday, February 10, 2017 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Lidgerwood, ND. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday, February 11, 2017 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, followed by the funeral mass at 11:00 am, with Rev. Bud Brooks officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Lidgerwood. Arrangements are entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.
Irene Marie Hruza was born on August 2, 1928 on the family farmstead in Moran Township to Charles and Mary (Pokorny) Hejtmanek. She grew up and began attending grade school at the age of 4 at Liberty Grove Country School. Irene graduated from Lidgerwood High School in 1944 at the age of 16.
On April 14, 1948, she married James M. Hruza at St. John's Catholic Church at Lidgerwood, ND. To this union, six children were born; Carol, Deborah, Larry, Linda, DuWayne and Kathleen. They lived on the farmstead for 54 years and farmed all of their lives. James passed away on October 7, 2003 and Irene moved to Wahpeton in October of 2009.
Irene was a lifelong member of St. John's Catholic Church and later St. Boniface Catholic Church in Lidgerwood. She taught CCD classes, held officer positions in the Christian Mothers, American Legion Auxiliary, Altar Society, and Moran Township. She catered for many weddings, anniversaries, family reunions, and many other events for 40 years. Her hobbies included cooking, gardening, sewing, canning, and helping on the farm. Her crowning glory was her family and spending time with them was among her greatest treasures.
Irene is survived by her children, Larry (Romae) Hruza, Breckenridge, MN, Linda (Marshall) Johnson, Gwinner, ND, Duwayne (Katrina) Hruza, Abercrombie, ND, and Kathleen (John) Rugenstein, Fairmount, ND; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Elsie Kelly, Vista CA; sisters-in-law, Serena Hejtmanek, Fargo, ND, Helga Hruza, Aurora, CO, and Shirley Hruza, Wickenburg, AZ; son-in-law, Don Resler, Wahpeton; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Mary; husband, James; daughter Deborah Resler; infant daughter, Carol; grandchild, James C. Hruza; brothers, Charles and Leonard Hejtmanek; brothers-in-law, James Kelly, Adolph Kordovsky, Eugene Novotny, Leonard Hruza, and Clarence Hruza; and sisters-in-law, Anna Marohl and Georgina Novotny.
