Iris Fluto

Iris was born on July 14, 1918 in rural Wyndmere , ND to Charles and Wilma (Olson) Mashek. She grew up and attended schools in West End Township northwest of Wyndmere. She worked on the home farm and also as a housekeeper in the area.

On February 8, 1938 Iris was united in marriage to Erling Fluto in Britton , SD. They made their home in Wyndmere where they raised their six children. Iris also worked at Cottonwood Turkey Farms for many years, and throughout her life she assisted many friends and relatives with various errands. Iris and Erling were caretakers at Wyndmere Lutheran Church for a number of years until Iris retired in 2000. Erling preceded her in death on June 30, 1993. In 2005, Iris moved to Wahpeton and has resided with her daughter, Lois this past year.

Iris was a member of Wyndmere Lutheran Church , made many quilts with the Mission Sewing group and made thousands of pounds of soap with the church ladies for world relief. She was known for her baking talents especially her doughnuts and lefse, and she collected decorative plates which she proudly displayed in her home. She loved spending time with her family and playing Kings in the Corner, which she usually won.

Iris is survived by her children, Don (Kathy) Fluto, Wyndmere, ND, Marvin (Diane) Fluto, Hartford, SD, Lois Waldera, Wahpeton, ND; her daughter-in-law, Marlys Fluto, Granite Falls, MN; her nine grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild; her one brother-in-law and one sister-in-law; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Erling; her three children, Elaine Nagel, LaVay Nogowski, and James Fluto; two grandchildren, Doug Nagel and Vincent Fluto; and her three sisters.
