The family followed her father's profession and moved from Fargo, ND to Sioux Falls, SD and Jean graduated in St. Louis Park, MN. She went on to attend one year of Business College and began working for Dayton's in Downtown Minneapolis, MN as a clerk. On a trip to Wahpeton, ND with a roommate she met the roommate's cousin, Harold "Heb" Diederick at a NDSSS basketball game.
