Joan Hardie

Joan Frances Hardie, 90, of Moorhead, MN, formerly of Wahpeton, ND, passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2026, in Moorhead, MN. Her funeral service will take place on Friday, October 2, 2026, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Wahpeton, at 11:00 am, with visitation one hour before. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Wahpeton.

Joan was born on December 22, 1935, at St. John’s Hospital in Fargo, ND, to Frank and Helen (Gust) Drussell. The family resided in Moorhead, MN.

Joan graduated from Moorhead High School in 1953. She studied radiology at the University of Minnesota, coming back to Moorhead and continuing her education at St. Ansgar Hospital in Moorhead. Joan worked many years as an X-ray technician in Fargo and West Fargo.

In 1958, she married Gordon Lyon in Moorhead, and the couple had 3 children, Matthew, Elizabeth, and Stephanie.

She worked at Dakota Clinic in Fargo in the medical records department for many years, a job she truly loved.

In 1992, she married Charles Hardie, and the couple lived in Fargo, ND. Joan continued to work at Dakota Clinic. In 2010, they moved to Wahpeton, ND. They enjoyed traveling to Arizona, Florida, Hawaii, the East Coast, and Germany. Charlie died on October 5, 2017. Joan continued to reside in Wahpeton, moving into “The Village” apartments in 2018, then moved to Sienna Court in Wahpeton in 2024, then to a memory care unit in Moorhead, with her final days in the care of HIA Hospice.

Joan was involved in many volunteer organizations, including the American Cancer Society (Women’s Way), Home Instead, Richland -Wilkin Food Pantry, Literary Club, and Bethel Lutheran Quilters.

She is survived by her 3 children, Matthew Lyon, Elizabeth Lyon, and Stephanie Lyon; 3 grandchildren, Amber (Robert) Sorensen, Samantha Frankl, and John Frankl; 2 great-grandchildren, Campbell and Bodhi; sister-in-law, Becky Drussell; several nieces and nephews and their families; and children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren on Charlie’s side of the family.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Beverly (Lester) Johnk; brother, Bill Drussell; and her husband, Charlie Hardie.
