John Hammond, 91, Abercrombie, ND passed away on February 1, 2017 in Weslaco, TX. A memorial will be held on Sunday, April 2, at 2:00 PM at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Abercrombie, with Rev. Michael Buller officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. Interment will be at the church cemetery with military rites. Arrangements are entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, ND.
John David Hammond was born July 27, 1925. He let go of this life on February 1, 2017 in Weslaco, TX where he has spent many winters with his forever friend Karen. He loved traveling, hunting, fishing, his family, and living life to the fullest. He was also known for gardening and sharing the fruits of his labor with many.
As a young man he joined the Army and served during WWII, returning home to rural Wahpeton where he married Carol J. Grinager in 1955 and was blessed with three children. He moved to Abercrombie, ND in 1966. He farmed and then began his own business of plumbing, heating and excavating in Richland County. He made many great friends throughout the years, and maintained a long, successful business until his retirement.
John was the youngest of 11 children, and was preceded in death, by his parents and siblings.
He is survived by his companion, Karen Halverson, Abercrombie, ND; daughter Vicky (Greg) Seger, Klamath Falls, Oregon; David (Andrea) Hammond, Abercrombie, ND; Vern (Dawn) Hammond, Litchfield, MN; Jill (Halverson) Salem, Monticello, MN; 17 grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and 20 great grandchildren whom Papa John loved dearly.
