Mabel Tunby

Mabel F. Tunby, 87, Wahpeton, ND, passed away Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at her home under the care of hospice and surrounded by her family. A Memorial Service will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 21, at Bethel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, with Rev. Jule' Ballinger officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 5 PM to 7 PM with a 7 PM Prayer Service and one hour before the service on Tuesday, all at Bethel Lutheran Church. Interment will be at Houghton Cemetery, Houghton SD. Arrangements have been entrusted with Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.

Mabel Frances Tunby was born June 22, 1928 near Mound City, SD at her home, the daughter of Christ and Helen (Wolfer) Schnaible. She graduated from High School at Herreid, SD and attended college at Mitchell, SD. Mabel lived and worked in Denver, CO before living in California where she worked at a bank. She was united in marriage to Verne Tunby on October 30, 1954 at First Baptist Church, Aberdeen, SD. They lived in Houghton, SD, until moving to Wahpeton, ND, in 1976. Verne passed away March 5, 1991 and Mabel continued to live in Wahpeton.

Mabel was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church. She enjoyed crocheting, baking and gardening. She was a faithful and dedicated wife, mother and caretaker.

Mabel is survived by two sons and two daughters: Todd Tunby, Laguna Hills, CA; Tim Tunby, Columbia, SD; Dianne Tunby, Wahpeton, ND; Denise Baker, Breckenridge, MN; two grandchildren, Kris Tunby, Aberdeen, SD and Ariana Tougas, Breckenridge, MN; and a sister, Joyce Schnaible, Aberdeen, SD.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Verne, her son Thomas, and her grandson Nicholas.

Memorials may be given to Anne Carlsen Center and Hospice of the Red River Valley.
