Melvin Fenske

August 15, 1923 — August 20, 2019

Melvin Fenske, 96, of Wahpeton, ND, passed away on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at St. Catherine’s Living Center in Wahpeton, under the care of CHI Health at Home Hospice.  Visitation will be held on Friday, August 23, 2019 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, followed by a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home in Wahpeton.  Visitation will continue on Saturday, August 24, 2019 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, followed by his funeral service at 10:00 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wahpeton.  Rev. Lyle Kath will officiate the service.  Burial will be at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Great Bend, ND.  Arrangements are entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home.

Melvin was born on August 15, 1923 in Brandenburg Township, rural Hankinson, ND, son of Erich & Verna (Rhoda) Fenske. He was baptized in Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend, ND and confirmed in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, ND.

Melvin served as a Sea Bee in the Navy from 1944 to 1948 where he made many lifelong friends. On June 9, 1948, he was united in marriage to Lorraine Krueger in Great Bend, ND. They farmed south of Great Bend before retiring to Wahpeton in 1981. Melvin was a devout Missouri Synod Lutheran and held many offices in the church and Lutheran Layman’s League. He was a Gideon and spoke in most of the local churches to support the ministries. Both Melvin and Lorraine went to Latvia, Russia to do volunteer work with the Lutheran Hour Ministries. It was also during that time they helped form the North Dakota chapter of the Orphan Grain Train.

Melvin is survived by his daughters LoAnn Loepp and Lois Fenske, Wahpeton, ND; grandchildren, Matt (Jenni) Randall, Rugby, ND, Mike Loepp, Wahpeton, ND and Amanda (Dylan) Heger, West Fargo, ND; great-grandchildren, Haylee, Andee and Maddee Randall, Rugby, ND; brothers, Orville Fenske, Wahpeton, ND, Marvin Fenske, Fargo, ND, and Lawrence (Rita) Fenske, Williamsville, NY; sister, Irene Olson, Fargo, ND; sister-in-law Laurel Fenske, Hankinson, ND. and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lorraine; son and daughter-in-law, Lynn and Sharon Fenske; son-in-law, John Loepp; his brother, Harold Fenske; brother-in-law, Aulden Olson; and sisters-in-law, Elaine Fenske and Marge Fenske.

A special thank you to the staff of Siena Court, St. Catherine’s Living Center and CHI Hospice for the loving and compassionate care they gave Melvin.
