Merle Gebro

Merle D. Gebro, 77, of Breckenridge, MN, passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at CHI St. Francis Nursing Home in Breckenridge, MN.  Visitation will be from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm followed by the funeral service at 3:00 pm on Sunday, April 28, 2019 at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home in Wahpeton.  Rev. John Andrews will officiate.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home.

Merle was born June 28, 1941 to Chester and Dorothy (Hoefs) Gebro in Hankinson, ND.  He grew up and attended school in Lidgerwood, ND.  In 1959, at the age of 18, Merle moved to Wahpeton, where he began working for Kost Bros. as a cement truck driver, retiring at the age of 53.

He was united in marriage to Jeanette “Janet” Herberg in 1965 in Wahpeton, ND, where they raised their family. Merle was an honest, hard-working husband and father, taking pride in providing for his family.  At the age of 55, Merle had a debilitating stroke, with the help of his family, he was able to remain at home for 8 years.  He then moved to CHI St. Francis Nursing Home where he had since resided.  Janet moved to the nursing home to be with Merle in March of 2013 until her passing.

Merle enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson and taking road trips, gardening, hanging out with his buddies and “coffee time” with friends.  During his time at the nursing home, he was known as the “un-official care-taker”, making sure everything was in ship-shape.

Merle is survived by his children: Terri (Brett) Benedict, Moorhead, MN, Cindy (Dwayne) Emly, Fairview, MT, Kevin (CoCo) Gebro, Albuquerque, NM, Dawn (Robin) Reese, Breckenridge, Shawn (Jen) Gebro, Wahpeton; 14 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette in 2013; his parents, Chester and Dorothy; 2 brothers, Dennis and Leon; and his sister, Kris Ann Gebro.
