Paul Wawers

Paul L. Wawers, 84, Wahpeton, ND, passed away Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at his home surrounded by his loving family. The Memorial Service will be 2:00 PM, Saturday, February 10, at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, ND, with Rev. Dale Lagodinski officiating.  Visitation will be from noon until the time of service with a 12:30 PM Rosary. Military Honors by ND Military Funeral Honors and Wahpeton Military Honor Unit.  Inurnment will be at a later date.

Paul Leo Wawers was born November 7, 1933 in Hankinson, ND, the son of Peter and Scholastica (Bernard) Wawers. Paul grew up near Fairmount where he graduated from Fairmount High School. He attended NDSSS in Wahpeton where he participated in football. He served in the Airforce in 1953 and 1954. He returned home and continued his education at Valley City State College where he also played football. Paul married Joan Layman on February 7, 1959. Paul taught at Granville, ND, before teaching Industrial Arts at Mandan Correctional Center where he also coached. Paul then went on to teach at Rosholt, SD and Hancock, MN. The family lived in Graceville, MN, then moved to Fairmount, ND in 1971 when Paul started employment at NDSCS where he worked for the next 27 years. In 1987, the family moved to Wahpeton and Paul retired in 1997 and continued living in Wahpeton.

Paul (Papa) loved to spend time with his children, grandchildren (hug-a-bugs) and family. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, playing cards and board games and was an avid sports enthusiast.

Paul is survived by his wife, Joan; his daughter, Midge Margaret (Scott Sannes) Thompson; his son Peter (Lea- his favorite daughter-in-law) Wawers; grandchildren: Samantha (Terrell) Knudson, Steevie Frankl, Xavier Thompson, Monet Thompson, Jade, Jamie, Jaycee, Jayla Wawers; great-grandchildren:  Teegan, Tavin and Tripp Knudson; his brother, Benjamin (Marilyn) Wawers, his sisters, Eve (Franklin) Miller and Marlys Miller; and sister-in-law, Edith Wawers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Edwin (Vangie) and Leander Wawers; his sisters, Ione (Eugene) O’Hearn and DiAnn (Al) Clementich.
