Raymond Matejcek

Raymond "Ray" Matejcek, 82, Fairmount, ND, passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at St. Catherine's Living Center, Wahpeton, ND. The Funeral Mass will be Monday, 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Fairmount, ND, with Rev. Scott Sautner as celebrant. Visitation will be Sunday from 4 PM to 7 PM with a 7 PM Prayer Service at Willow Creek Chapel, Wahpeton and one hour before the service at the church on Monday. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Fairmount. Arrangements have been entrusted with Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.

Ray was born March 26, 1932, to Joseph and Anna (Gebhart) Matejcek at Wahpeton, ND. He attended grade school at Summit No. 4 and graduated from Fairmount High School in 1950. He worked on the home farm and married Doris Schutt on July 25, 1953 at St. John's Catholic Church in Wahpeton. They lived in Fairmount for a couple of years before living in rural Fairmount, where they farmed. Ray was also a substitute mail carrier for 36 years. Ray retired from farming in 1996; in 2006 the couple moved into Fairmount, where they have since lived.

Ray was a longtime member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church where he also was on the church council and a past trustee. He served for 25 years on the Fairmount Farmers Union Co-op Board and also on the Richland County Water Management Board. As a young man he enjoyed fishing and hunting deer; he also bowled for several years. He enjoyed a good card game with his friends and was known to have a keen sense of humor with a straight face; while having a twinkle in his eye.

Ray is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Doris, Fairmount; a daughter and three sons: Mona (Mike) Liane, Devils lake, ND; Joe Matejcek, Fairmount; Tim (Lynnette) Matejcek, Fairmount; Ross Matejcek, Blanchard, ND; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mary (Gerald "Oz") Meyer, Towner, ND.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Anna; two brothers, LeRoy and Wilbur Matejcek; a sister, Eleanor Sanger; and a nephew, David Matejcek.
