Richard Kurowski

May 6, 1952 — February 25, 2015

Richard S. Kurowski, 62, Wahpeton, ND passed away on Wed., Feb. 25, 2015 at his residence under the care of his family and Riveredge Hospice. Funeral Mass will be Mon., Mar. 2, at 11:00 AM at St. John's Catholic Church, Wahpeton, with Rev. Dale Lagodinski officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday from 3:00 to 6:00 PM with a 5:45 PM Knights of Columbus Rosary and a 6:00 PM Prayer Vigil at St. John's Catholic Church. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Wahpeton. Arrangements have been entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.

Richard was born on May 6, 1952 in Warren, Minn. to Matthew and Stella (Rominski) Kurowski. He grew up in the Stephen, Minn. area and graduated from Stephen High School. He then attended Thief River Falls College and earned an Associate's Degree in Carpentry. He then served in the US Army from 1972 to 1975.

Richard was united in marriage to Audrey Kroll in Argyle, Minn. on June 16, 1973. After he was discharged from military service, they moved to Wahpeton, ND in 1975. He was an instructor for Richland County Vo-Tech in Wahpeton for 31 years until he retired in 2006. During summers, he operated Dak-Min, the remodeling company that he owned. After retirement, Richard continued to share his construction talents with Habitat for Humanity, and he also enjoyed working the beet harvest for Blaufuss Farms.

Richard was a member of the Wahpeton VFW, American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Beefalo 75 Club, Jaycees, the bowling league, and the St. John's School Board. As a teacher, he invested countless hours in mentoring his students well beyond the classroom; he was committed to ensuring they had all the tools they needed to succeed. In his personal time, he was well-known for his love of fishing and his strong, quiet presence. He spent decades pulling in his limit of walleyes on Lake of the Woods and in recent years, at his lake home on Big Stone Lake, SD. He was a devout Catholic who loved hearing his grandchildren say their bedtime prayers after enjoying big bowls of ice cream together.

Richard is survived by his wife, Audrey; his daughters, Frances (Bradley) Terfehr, Cologne, Minn., Kris Walsh, Meridian, ID; his sons, Steven (Amanda) Kurowski, Wahpeton, ND, Daniel (Rebecca) Kurowski, Sartell, Minn.; his grandchildren, Abigail, Connor, and Carson Terfehr; Kaitlyn Walsh and Paige Hinman; Hailey and Madison Kurowski; Breanna, Lillian and Grant Kurowski; his sisters, Darlene (David) Wesolowski, Stephen, Minn.; Nancy (Gary) Hebert, O'Fallon, MO; and Jennifer (Scott) Kazmierczak, Fargo, ND.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his granddaughter, Mary Terfehr, his sister, Karen Bergeron, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Carl Sr. and Effie Kroll.
