Robert “Butch” Allen Kempfer, age 79, of Wahpeton, ND, passed away on Friday, April 3, 2026, at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, ND.
He was born on February 13, 1947, to James “Bud” and Helen (Brummond) Kempfer in Foxhome, MN. He spent his early years in Foxhome and later attended Breckenridge High School, graduating in 1965.
During his youth, Butch enjoyed spending many hours horseback riding and playing baseball. His love for sports stayed with him throughout his life, and he remained a devoted fan, even making a memorable trip to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
On December 4, 2021, Butch married his longtime partner of 27 years, Shannon Marohl. The couple made their home in Wahpeton, ND. He farmed alongside his family for many years until his health led to his retirement.
In addition to the life he built, Butch stepped into a full and lively home, becoming a steady father figure to four girls. He took that role to heart, making sure they were always cared for, provided for, and supported in every way.
He showed his love not just in words, but in the everyday things – being present, dependable, and always willing to lend a hand. His love and support were constant, shaping their lives in ways that will never be forgotten.
Butch was a quiet man with a kind, generous heart and a wide circle of friends who will miss him dearly.
Though he was a quiet and simple man, Butch had a sharp, understated sense of humor. He was known for his perfectly timed one-liners and subtle wit – often catching those around him off guard and leaving them smiling or shaking their heads with a laugh. He didn’t say much, but when he did, it mattered.
At the heart of it all was his wife, Shannon. She was his world – the true priority and love of his life – and would do anything for her. His devotion to her was evident in everything he did. He showed his love daily through his care, loyalty, and unwavering commitment. The bond they shared was a testament to true love and dedication.
Butch is survived by his wife, Shannon; his children, Brehyn (Kevin) Christopher, Brittany (Jesse) Canton, Kortney (Brad) Sturgess, and Kasey (Greg) Burhans; and his grandchildren, Toby Burhans, Storm Canton, Cade Canton, Karter Christopher, Kasey Christopher and Kira Christopher.
He is also survived by his brothers, James (Faye) Kempfer, David (Barb) Hagstrom and his sister, Joanne (Mike) Stadther; along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James “Bud” Kempfer; Helen (Kempfer), and Clifford Hagstrom; his sister, Linda Friederichs; and his beloved dog, Jasper.
A memorial celebration will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 3:00 PM at the Hughes Shelter, Wahpeton, ND.
