Samuel was born February 4, 2013, in Breckenridge, MN, to Connor and Desi (Carrlson) Severance. His 13 years of life were filled with so much love, passion, and triumph. His passion for sports, baseball and football in particular, showed him to be a leader and a true friend to the many who were fortunate enough to experience it with him. His ability to stay humble in victory and remain unwavered in defeat was something that can’t simply be taught—a true measure of his character.
His love of hunting and fishing allowed him to create memories that will last a lifetime. From harvesting his first deer on his grandparents’ farm to fishing with cousins, he created memories that will endure. His time spent at deer camp, and the stories that it bore will be remembered for generations.
His life was spent in Wyndmere, North Dakota, but he loved any opportunity to travel and experience new things. He made every family vacation an unforgettable adventure. He loved to try new foods and experience all that life had to offer. Much like his mind was a sponge collecting information, so too was his soul, collecting and absorbing every experience that made him so beautiful and unique.
His intellect was something the rest of us simply marveled at. To say he was smart would be an understatement. His mind was incredible. He loved trivia, and boy, could he surprise you with an answer. He excelled both academically and in his extracurricular activities. Being the youngest ever selected to compete on his school’s Academic Olympics team was impressive enough, but to help them win the state championship, legendary. Whether winning geography bees, preparing for a band and choir concert, participating in various contests and service projects through FFA, or receiving the superior acting award in One-Act play, his passion and drive was a marvel to experience.
Sam’s maturity and kindness made him uniquely suited for turning strangers into friends and enriching the lives of all who knew him. His presence was calming when called for and undoubtedly comedic when a laugh was needed. He always seemed to know which was right. His constant smile and infectious laugh will never be forgotten. His impact was immediately felt by all who were lucky enough to meet him. We are all better for having known him.
He is survived by his parents, Connor & Desi, sisters, Madeline and Ella, paternal grandparents Ellis and Bonnie Severance, maternal grandparents, Donald and Sandra Carrlson, many aunts, uncles, cousins, and an entire community full of people who loved him.
