Wallace James Wittenburg, 78, passed away January 21, 2017 in Fargo, ND. Wally was born October 31, 1938 in Grinnell, Iowa to William and Bernice Wittenburg. He graduated from Eldora IA in 1957 and entered the US Navy, serving four years.
Wally was united in marriage to Nancy (Eames) Wittenburg on October 21, 1959 in Grinnell, IA. They settled in Wyndmere, ND in 1967 and began a lifelong career of raising turkeys and family. His passion was turkey farming; his love was football; and his pride and joy was family and community.
Wally was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church, serving on many boards. He was a long time member of the ND Turkey Federation, National Turkey Federation, 4-H leader and volunteer football coach. He was known for his dedication and service to the community of Wyndmere, ND. Wally left an impression on everyone he met with his honesty, compassion, and humor.
Wally is survived by his wife Nancy, children Kim (Brian) Nelson, Fergus Falls, MN, Joe (Pat) Wittenburg, Wyndmere, ND, Carl (Sharlene) Wittenburg, Alexandria, MN, Troy (Michelle) Wittenburg, Edmond, OK. Grandchildren: Jessica (Joe) Metcalf, Nick (Kari) Wittenburg, Dena (Terry) Motl, Beth Althoff, Jill (Brett) Pauly, Nate Wittenburg, Haley (Zach Lautt) Wittenburg, Ashtin Wittenburg, Kyle Wittenburg, Gary Althoff, Hannah Wittenburg, Marah Wittenburg and Wyatt Wittenburg. Great Grandchildren: Levi, Brenna and Brady Metcalf; Lidia, Chase, and Jay Motl, Leighton, Brevin and Easton Pauly, Kennedy Lautt, Brecklyn Wittenburg, a sister-in-law, Patricia Wittenburg, Grand Junction, CO, and several nieces and nephews.
Wally is preceded in death by his parents William and Bernice, and step mother Bertha Wittenburg, and siblings Clarice Mullins, Bob Wittenburg and Betty Rindles.
Visitation will be held Thursday, January 26 at Wyndmere Lutheran Church from 4-7 pm with a prayer service at 7:00. The family asks that you help celebrate his football passion by wearing a jersey or football clothing from a football team of your choice, to the prayer service. His funeral will be held on Friday, January 27 at 10:30 am at Wyndmere Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Gol-Aal Cemetery rural Wyndmere. Military Honors will be provided by North Dakota Honor Unit and Wyndmere American Legion Brown-Nelson Post No. 153 & "Sons of American Legion".
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Wyndmere EMT Ambulance Service, Gol-Aal Cemetery or Wyndmere-Lidgerwood Youth Football and sent to PO Box 130, Wyndmere, ND, 58081.
